When someone is injured, most people want to help right away. However, some common first aid myths can actually make injuries worse.
Here are five mistakes to avoid.
1. Using Butter on Burns
Applying butter or oils traps heat in the skin. Instead, cool burns with cool running water for 10–20 minutes.
2. Tilting the Head Back During a Nosebleed
This can cause blood to run down the throat. Instead, lean forward and pinch the nose for about 10 minutes.
3. Moving Someone With a Possible Spine Injury
If someone has fallen or been in an accident, avoid moving them unless necessary for safety.
4. Removing Objects From Deep Wounds
If an object is embedded in a wound, do not remove it. Instead, stabilize it and wait for medical professionals.
5. Waiting Too Long to Call 911
If someone has chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, or becomes unresponsive, call emergency services immediately.
