What To Do If Someone Stops Breathing

From Your Local CPR Experts at 605CPR

Seeing someone suddenly stop breathing can be frightening, but knowing what to do can save a life. When breathing stops, the brain begins to suffer damage within minutes. Acting quickly is critical.

Step 1: Check Responsiveness

Tap the person and shout, “Are you okay?” If there is no response and the person is not breathing normally, treat it as an emergency.

Step 2: Call 911

Call 911 immediately or ask someone nearby to call while you begin providing care.

Step 3: Start CPR

Place the heel of your hand in the center of the chest and begin chest compressions. Push hard and fast at a rate of about 100–120 compressions per minute.

If you are trained in CPR, provide 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths.

Step 4: Use an AED if Available

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are designed for public use and provide voice instructions. They can dramatically improve survival from sudden cardiac arrest.

Step 5: Continue Until Help Arrives

Continue CPR until emergency responders arrive or the person begins breathing.

Learning CPR before an emergency happens gives you the confidence to act quickly when seconds matter.
