What To Do During a Choking Emergency
Choking emergencies require immediate action. Knowing the signs can help you respond quickly.
Signs of Severe Choking
Inability to speak
Silent coughing
Blue lips or skin
Clutching the throat
Encourage Coughing First
If the person can cough or speak, encourage them to continue coughing.
When To Act
If the airway becomes completely blocked, abdominal thrusts may be needed.
Call 911
If the object cannot be removed or the person becomes unresponsive, call emergency services immediately.
